How to Choose a Maternity Photographer

Pregnancy has plenty of exciting challenges! In addition to picking your baby’s name and nursery colors, you might be thinking about finding the perfect maternity photographer. What a dilemma! How can someone outside of your family possibly capture your unique personality?

Although this may seem like a daunting task, I promise that a few considerations can make all the difference! So, without further ado, here are my tips for how to choose a maternity photographer:

Do you like their photography style?

Everyone has a preferred style of photography, and only you can decide what is best for your family. Whether you prefer a more natural style, brightly edited colors, or something else–Be sure that your photographer’s displayed work reflects that style. More than likely, a photographer will include a description of their style on their website, and most are happy to elaborate on their aesthetic if you ask.

Do they have an impressive gallery?

It’s fairly easy to tell an amateur from a seasoned professional by the quality and depth of their portfolio. If they have no portfolio or only a few photos, if the display quality of the photos are poor, or if the subjects look uncomfortable–That’s a good sign that they are not the type of photographer you would want to trust to capture your family’s precious memories. A good professional photographer will have a full gallery of happy, smiling subjects and high-quality images. In short, the quality of the photography on their site will reflect the quality of photos given to you.

Are they accommodating?

Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, you may want to consider things like your distance from the photographer, their travel policies, and your preferred session setting. Are you comfortable driving to a studio or location, or do you need a photographer who can come to you? Be sure to check with your photographer of choice and sort out your essential logistical issues before you commit to them.

Are they polite from the start?

Although a maternity photo session is a lot of fun, it can feel vulnerable in front of the camera. If a photographer is rude over an email exchange, imagine spending two hours posing for them! Customer service is important to quality professionals, so be wary of those who are impolite or unresponsive.

Maternity sessions can take place either at a scenic outdoor location, in my studio in Lowell, MA, or in your home. I travel throughout New England, with most of my sessions taking place in the Greater Boston Area including Lowell, Andover, Burlington, Cambridge, Boston, and Tewksbury, MA. I especially agree with the last two points! You always want a photographer to be polite and accommodating, but it is especially important with a very pregnant mother 😉

They should also be considerate and conscious of how difficult it might be to sit on the ground or climb on something.ReplyCancel
